WHO IS SUPERVISING THE KIDS AT THE DANCES?
I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself and give a little information on the dances. My name is Kris Martin and I have been working with kids for the past seven years and have been running middle school dances for the past five. I oversee what goes on at all the dances and attend every dance myself. I try to treat all the kids at the dances as if they were a friend of my children's. I am not their parent, but I am responsible for their safety and actions while they are at the dance. In addition to myself, we have a professional security service that checks all the kids before they enter the dance for anything dangerous or inappropriate. There are also enough adult chaperones so that there is always an adult within sight of the kids during the dance.
WHAT GOES ON AT MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCES?
The dances are a safe, fun, supervised place for middle school kids to dance, play video games, watch movies but, for the most part, just hang out. At every dance we enforce a code of conduct and a dress code that I created. Each and every participant that enters the dance is screened by security for inappropriate items. Kids are not allowed to leave the dances until a parent comes inside and checks them out of the dance. I try to treat all of the kids at the dance like friends of my kids. I am not their parent but I feel responsible for their behavior and safety.
ARE THE DANCES APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR CHILD?
I like to say that the dances are rated PG-12. I control the content of the music played, movies shown and video games available. We play video games that are rated "Teen" and I do not use games that are rated "Mature". Movies that are played at the dances are very similar. Almost all of the movies played are rated PG-13 and we never play a R rated movie. I screen all movies that we play and use my judgment if they should be played. I have a 13 year old son and would not show or make available anything that I would not let my son watch or do at home. The rules on dancing are very simple, kids can shake their butts and gyrate as much as they want as long as they are not touching anyone else. We do not allow kids to touch each other inappropriately or at anytime make contact below the waist.
